The Littlest orphan

Chapter 1: A Welcome Guest

Dear Mrs. Kanre,

There’s been an overgrowth of orphans in town. A fire that wiped out most of the town being the cause. So I’ve established a rule, an orphan seen by a town citizen is free game, and can be adopted without need of paperwork as long as they want to go with the person. There is a new orphan though, she is exempt from the rule. Her name is unknown, the other orphans just refer to her as "LO", Little Orphan. I know you're upset from your child being killed in the fire, but can you open your heart just one more time? She's small, and wears an orange dress, and a red headband. Her eyes are cold grey, and her hair is light blonde. If you find her, I entrust her to you. Nothing can replace your child, but I emplore you, find it in your heart to give this one a second chance.

Signed,

The Mayor

Mrs. Kanre read the letter over and over, and then looked in her backyard. There was the little girl, beneath the apple tree at the edge of her yard. The girl didn’t know that Mrs. Kanre saw her there.

She ate a ripe apple, not a care in the world. She then rembered she had friends to provide for now. She counted on her fingers how many there were, and picked that many. She was about to run when she spoted Mrs. Kanre. She was alread exsausted from running from town to the country. "Lotsa apples..." she said. The girl was hardly more than a baby, she didn't realise she wasn't supposed to show what she was stealing to the victim. "Yes, that is a lot of apples, can I have them back now?" Then it dawned on the child, she should run, fast. But she didn't. She sat, and began eating one of the apples. She handed the rest to Mrs .Kanre. "Hungwy..." she said between a bite. After she ate the apple, it was not long before she fell asleep. Mrs. Kanre smiled, she couldn't just leave this child here. She carried her in, and placed her on a couch in the living room.

LO woke with a start. She looked around, she was not used to the warmth and security of being in a house. She stretched and yanwed, then attempted to get off of the couch. She fell stright down, but managed to land on her feet. "Oh, are you okay dear?" came Mrs. Kanre's voice. "Fawl..." she muttered. Mrs. Kanre chuckled, she had almost forgot how much fun kids were. One night, Mrs. KAnre stopped her on one of her many trips around the house. "Would you like me to be your mommy?" she asked. LO's eyes shone bright. "Mommy?" she asked "If you want..." LO nodded. "But first, we have somewhere to go today..." Lo looked up at her. "Where wego?" she asked. It was funny the way she talked, she made two words into one often. "I'm going to introduce you to my other child, the one that didn't die in the fire..." Mrs. Kanre's other child was a girl named Anna. "Have another baby so soon mom?" asked Anna when she saw LO. "No!" She trundled up the drive, LO in tow. "This is LO, Little Orphan, I'm going to adopt her." Anna looked thoughtful for a moment. "Shouldn't you give her a real name first?" The thought hadn't struck Mrs. Kanre yet. "Nameis Austin..." said LO thoughtfully as she played with her headband. "Oh, so your name is Austin?" Anne looked at her. “Isn’t that a boy’s name?” Austin returned her look, “It work bothway...” she said. “Smart baby...” said Anne. “And so cute!” said Mrs. Kanre.

A lot of preperations had to be made for Austin. She was given the guest room, which was converted into a room of her very own. Mrs. Kanre decided to homeschool her. This was her last child, she wanted to be with her, even when she was taught. She tested here and there, to find her likes and dislikes. Foodwise she seemed keen on seafood and fruit. Musicwise she liked slow guitar instrumentals the most. With a child the house became a home to Mrs. Kanre, and to Austin as well. She loved to help Mrs. Kanre cook, and never missed a beat. She also absoulutly loved exploring the forest outside of town. Mrs. Kanre was cautious about this because she feared that the oprhans she provided for might catch up with her. Something did happen when Austin explored the forest, but not that, and not anything anyone could have ever expected. A howl in the air mingled with Austin’s scream as one of the most frightning nights of her life began.
