Hey, everyone! Here is my Tingle Review I hope you guys enjoy it! It took a very, very long time to make!
Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland Review Tingle_rupee
Name: Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland
Developer: Vanpool
Publisher: Nintendo
Release Dates: September 2, 2006 (Japan) September 14 2007 (Europe)
Number of Players: 1
Rating: PEGI: 12+, ESRB equivelant, most likely, E10+
Ah, yes. Tingle how we all love you! Well, maybe not everyone loves you. Most people on here, I'm assuming have played at least one Zelda game, and a number of you know Tingle. Yes, Tingle the 35 year old man who thinks he's a fairy from Majora's Mask and many other sequels. In Wind Waker he officially became disliked by almost everyone. A Japanese developer, Vanpool believed with a good game to his name Tingle could become popular and liked, even in North America. The question is, is Rupeeland that game?
Story
Story, for this game isn't its strong point. But, it does provide some background for our green clad hero.

Tingle in the Opening
Tingle begins as a 35 year old man bored with life. He hears a voice telling him to go to the Western Pool. Tingle arrives and learns about Rupeeland. A Paradise filled with food, no working, and women. The being offering this paradise to Tingle is called Uncle Rupee.
Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland Review Uncle_Rupee
It makes ya wonder why Tingle doesn't just throw him in!
In order to reach this paradise Tingle has to collect all the Rupee's he can and throw them into the Western Pool. This causes a tower to erupt out of the the pool and brings Tingle closer to Rupeeland. The other catch is Tingle must don a green suit and literally live off Rupees! Along the journey he meets many different characters. Two of the most important being Pinkle (Tingle's Female fairy assistant) and Barkle (Tingle's Dog) It isn't really a super strong story, but it gets the game play set up.
Story: 6/10
Game play
Lets be serious the main reason most people play games is the game play. Well, Rupeeland plays very differently than regular Zelda Games. Tingle as you can tell is not the strongest fighter. So, in order to protect himself he has to hire one of 30 different bodyguards to fight for Tingle. Tingle can fight, but it takes longer for him to win and he loses more Rupees. That's right, Tingle loses Rupees when he is hurt. When Tingle runs into an enemy a dust cloud gathers around him and you must tap the cloud multiple times in order to win.

The battles resemble Cartoon style Brawls.
Also, in order for new areas to open up, to get more information, and recipes, Tingle has to pay townspeople. This is where the major complaint of the game is. Each person has a certain amount they want for the information. Say, they want 500 Rupees. If you pay them 499 Rupees they won't tell you anything, and even worse, they'll take all the money you offered. Then you try 2000 Rupees and they'll take all of it even if they only wanted 500. This can be partly corrected by saving in Tingle's house before initiating any bartering.

A typical bartering sequence.
Throughout the course of the game Tingle must collect money by helping citizens find missing items, or killing enemies. Then once he gets enough he must throw them into the Western Pool. The tower that grows out of this pool gets higher as the game goes along. Tingle can use the tower as a launch pad for his balloon which allows him to travel even farther distances.

Tingle throwing Rupees into the pool and fighting a boss.
Rupeeland has numerous islands to which Tingle can explore. Some of which have dungeons that allow Tingle to risk his life to get even bigger bucks. The dungeons are similar to regular Zelda games, but some of the puzzles and how you go about doing the puzzles can be a bit frustrating. The boss fights are entertaining though. One of the boss fights is strikingly similar to Punch-Out!! The rules for each boss battle are different which allows for a bit more fun.
Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland Review Freshly-picked-tingles-rosy-rupeeland-20070914010423209_640w
One of the game's dungeons and one of the Zelda references.
Throughout the game Tingle can also collect Recipes that he can cook and sell to someone who prefers that item. This is one of the main ways to make money in the game. To get ingredients Tingle has to fight certain monsters and even fall into rivers at some points. I don't really have any complaints with the whole cooking aspects but I wish they wouldn't have relied on it so much to try and bring in the dough.
Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland Review Freshly-picked-tingles-rosy-rupeeland-20070914010417600_640w
Tingle cooking.
Another optional side quest that allows Tingle to make even more money is mapping. Early on in the game Tingle runs into an elderly woman who has a hard time seeing to make her maps. Tingle decides to help her by mapping landmarks on the maps. Whenever Tingle lands in a new area he runs into this kid who has found a map. Tingle must then purchase this map to try and fill it out. In order to fill it out Tingle must find something rather out of the ordinary and circle where it is at on his map. This system isn't too shabby, but it isn't rather accurate in some places. Tingle gets paid money for every landmark he fills out and once the map is completed the old lady buys the map off Tingle and he must buy it if he wishes to continue using it.
Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland Review Freshly-picked-tingles-rosy-rupeeland-20070914010424975_640w
Tingle's first mapping job.
One other thing that is entirely optional and doesn't provide any money, is collecting Rupee goods. Rupee goods are items that hang out inside Tingle's house on the top screen. He cans collecting them in dungeons and by helping other people with their problems. This does affect the game in some places however and it can give you a different ending if you collect them all. The Rupee goods are where the game's bizarre since of humor comes in. The descriptions for the Rupee Goods are very random and they did make me chuckle more than once.
Another thing that made me laugh throughout the game is the few Zelda references packed away. For instance a few characters refer to Tingle as a being dressed in green who will save them. This does fit Tingle's description, but poor Tingle can barely save himself! So, it has to be referncing Link. There are a few characters who also may be recognized from the Zelda series. For instance there are Subrosians, who call themselves the Salona now, but their appearance is very similar. Another reference is the Stalchildren. There is an entire boat full of Stalchildren, but instead they are referred to as Skeleton Pirates. (Very Original) There are also a few Zora shaped statues, but they are just called Fish Head statues. My favorite references is the classic secret theme from Zelda. When ever you have one of the bodyguards named Teddy Todo with you, and you unlock a door, he pulls out a boombox which plays the theme of secrets from the other Zelda games. I thought this was a nice touch, and I would have liked to see it done more.
The whole process of progressing through the game can get a bit repetitive. Explore areas, make food, sell food, put money in tower, and then repeat in the new area. But, the game is quite charming and if you try this process can be overlooked.
The game play has some problems but they can be overlooked and you can dig down into the deeper part of the game which is quite enjoyable once you look past the repetition.
Game play: 7/10
Graphics
The graphics in this game certainly aren't terrible. There may not be a whole lot to them, but they help top the experience off. For instance, in the bartering sequences its funny to look at the faces, it adds a bit more of a comical feel to it.
Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland Review Freshly-picked-tingles-rosy-rupeeland-20070914010444334_640w
The Cartoony graphics add an extra layer of expression to the characters.
Like many other aspects of this game the graphics help fit the mood, and strangly fit Tingle to a T. They may not be exceptional, but they make for an interesting aspect.
Graphics: 8/10
Sound
The game doesn't have a whole lot of music actually in the game. It relies mostly on background noises to help set the game off. If you're in a swamp you hear the sound of frogs croaking. If you're in a field you hear the sound of birds chirping. It’s really rather simple but its amusing none the less. Also, the characters voices are quite funny. They are made up of random mutterings like most of the other Zelda games and they can be funny to listen to. I personally like the voice of the bridge builder the most, but that’s just me.
The sound is relatively mediocre, but it sets the mood for the whole bizarro adventure.
Sound: 6.5/10
Controls
I didn't find many things wrong with the controls. You use the control pad, or you can use the stylus to guide Tingle around the environment. Whenever you come to a battle though, you must tap the ensuing smoke cloud repeatively to try and alter the outcome. As I mentioned earlier I had a bit of a hard time with the controls for mapping, and controlling the bodyguards in the dungeons can be a bit of a hassle, but the controls are pretty smooth throughout.
Controls: 8.5/10
Replayability
There is definitely a lot here for completionists. You can try and collect all the recipes, get all the Rupee Goods, hire all the body guards, complete all the maps, and collect all the dialogs. But, if you aren't a video game completionist you won't find a lot here to satisfy you in this regard. Once you beat the game you can stop, but you could be missing out n some more of the games charm.
Replayability: 7/10
Import Friendliness
Even though Vanpool created this game to try and give the world a better take on Tingle, not many people in America will get the opportunity to play it. This was my first import, so I was very excited by everything about it. Since the game came out in Europe you can play the game entirely in English, Spanish, German, French, and Dutch. This gives you a lot of opportunities to play the game no matter what language you speak. So, therefore I have to say that this game is very import friendly.
Import Friendliness: 10/10
Censorship
Ok, so this really isn't a category of the review, but an alert per say. I come from a strict family that doesn't allow me to play video games with swearing in them. (Well, very rarely) I know there has to be more people out there with this problem too, and in this section I will dive into the alerts for those people. For one, this is a British game and, I don't know how many of you know that in Britain the H word isn't considered swearing, so this game uses this word a bit, if my memory can recall it uses it about, twice, which isn't terribly bad. Then the main reason that this game has a higher rating is because of the character Pinkle. Normally she doesn't cause many problems in this since, but if you collect all the Rupee Goods throughout the game Tingle gets to meet the real her, and regardless, she "rewards" him. I won't spell it out for you, but I think you can understand.
Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland Review Pinkle
Meet Pinkle.
Overall
Let me tell you this straight up, Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland is a horrible Zelda game. But, if you don't judge it on Zelda standards it is a great game, that I wish many people could have enjoyed. That's not to say that game is perfect, it is far from it, but it is a quirky little game that sheds some light on one of the Zelda series strangest characters. So, please people, I implore you give this game a chance, if you do maybe your idea of Tingle could change and we may get a sequel.
Overall: 7/10

What's not to love about Tingle?

Thanks go to IGN and Zeldapedia for the pictures. Thanks goes to Nintendo and Vanpool for creating this game.

Niche is something that only appeals to a certain amount of people. Little King's Story, won a lot of awards, except no one really paid attention to it they were too busy buying really popular games, and they missed a really good one... I like games like that. Games that most people would never even know about, but our fun/good.

Yes! Cult classic is also another term for it, most people don't know about it but there is a bunch of people who like it, similarly to a cult.
