Actualy Donkey Kong was going to star Popeye and a few other characters but the Popeye company didn't want that to happen so they wouldn't let them. Then Nintendo made it their own and he probably eats mushrooms because Popeye did eat Spinich.

They were going to make Donkey Kong about Popeye, the company that made Popeye didn't want that. So, Nintendo made Donkey Kong and co.
